MP: PIL seeks permanent mechanism to monitor assets of MPs, MLAs

INDORE: A petition has been filed before high court seeking setting up of a permanent mechanism for continuous monitoring of assets of members of parliaments ( MPs ) and members of legislative assemblies ( MLAs ) to check undue accretion of wealth.The division bench of Justice PK Jaiswal and Justice Vivek Rusia on Monday reserved the order on admission, in the petition filed by social activist Tapan Bhattacharya through advocate Anand Mohan Mathur.The petitioner has referred to an order passed by Supreme Court in February 2018 directing for formation of a permanent mechanism for monitoring assets and source of income of politicians during their five-year tenure. The mechanism had been directed to be formed at Central level.“The mechanism also allows for the body to check assets of politicians during their tenure and if any undue accretion is seen, the same may be reported to Vidhan Sabha for disqualification of the person from the post or recommendation may be sent by them for taking action under prevention of corruption act,” advocate Anand Mohan Mathur said.The mechanism will also be responsible for reporting any such changes in property and assets of MPs and MLAs in public domain, the petitioner has stated.A letter had been written by petitioner to Election Commission of India regarding formation of the committee to which a reply had been received stating that ECI has already written to Centre regarding formation of such a permanent mechanism.In the PIL filed here, petitioner has sought for the mechanism to be implemented as per Supreme Court order, especially as elections in Madhya Pradesh are nearing.
