INDORE: A man forced by police to dive into a pond after a criminal drowned on Friday evening in Banganga area, triggering anger in the locality.A police team had gone to Tigariya Badshah area to arrest fugitives Ravi Barik and Jitendra . The cops had got a tip-off that the duo was drinking in the area. The suspect saw the cops and tried to escape.Two constables gave a chase and nabbed Jitendra but Ravi jumped into the Tigariya Badshah pond. In a desperate attempt to catch him, the cops allegedly asked some people sitting on the banks to jump into the pond and nab Ravi.One of them, Atmaram Bamniya, got so scared that he jumped into the pond though he couldn’t swim. With all the focus on Ravi who was swimming hard for the other bank, no one noticed that Atmaram had started drowning. Before anyone could help him, he vanished from sight. Locals started protesting and demand that police rescue him.A team went into the pond to look for him but only came out with his body. “The two constables have denied shouting at the man to jump into the waterbody to catch the accused. They said that he was drunk and jumped into the pond by himself,” said DIG Harinarayanachari Mishra. An eyewitness, however, told mediapersons that he saw police shout at him to jump in.
