Ujjain BJP MP declares intentions to defy SC deadline on crackers

INDORE: Hours after Supreme Court restricted bursting of firecrackers for two hours till 10pm on Diwali, BJP MP from Ujjain, Chintamani Malviya , on Tuesday threatened to break the deadline on the festival day, claiming that he cannot tolerate interference in Hindu traditions “To uphold my religious traditions, if I have to go to jail, I will be happy to go to jail,” Malviya said in a social media post that went viral inviting comments from different corners.“I will celebrate Diwali in my traditional way and burst crackers after 10pm, after performing prayers for Goddess Laxmi. I can’t tolerate anybody’s interference in our Hindu traditions,” the BJP MP said.His statements came hours after Supreme Court fixed a two-hour time period from 8 pm to 10 pm for bursting them on Diwali and other festivals. For New Year and Christmas celebrations, the court allowed bursting crackers between 11:45 pm to 12:30 am.The Apex court had made it clear that the order on restriction of firecrackers would be applicable across the country and people would be liable to face contempt for not complying with the direction.“I don’t know if my statements or intended action would qualify contempt of court.
