“When my cousin came down for a vacation from Delhi, he was surprised to see such colourful public toilet facilities. While the Sulabh toilet complexes sport folk art and manadanas, the stark walls of the district jail have gotten a splash of kitschy pop art , highlighting Indian culture. This kind of a painting then adds more value to the Indore Zoo walls,” shares Mahesh. In our quest to gain that, we are giving rotaries, footpaths, public walls, slum entrances and other places of the city an artistic overhaul. While the Sulabh toilet complexes sport folk art and manadanas, the stark walls of the district jail have gotten a splash of kitschy pop art , highlighting Indian culture. And it doesn’t stop at that. The boundary wall and over-bridge of the Indore railway station has been adorned with eye-catching paintings of famous monuments of the state, that pop out thanks to the 3D effect created by the painters. Presenting a lowdown on the colourful lanes of the city gearing up for Swachh Survekshan 2019…Not many cities can boast of a multihued sulabh toilet complex! However, Indore's public loos have got a bright and colour makeover, with folk Warli and Gond art, and bright flowers and mandanas dotting its walls.Agrima Shrivastava, design student and resident of Tilak Nagar, where one of the sulabh complexes has traditional folk art on its walls, tells us, “While the toilets are definitely hygienic, the Indore Municipal Corporation (IMC) has upped their visual appeal too. It looks like a washroom of a high-end restaurant now.” Not just Tilak Nagar, a lot of other areas in the city have their own colourful Sulabh complexes. Even visitors to the city have noticed the change. “When my cousin came down for a vacation from Delhi, he was surprised to see such colourful public toilet facilities. He added that Indore was definitely on its way to becoming ODF++,” shares Sangharsh Acharya, an engineering student, who volunteers with IMC for Swachh Indore projects.Image courtesy: Swachh Indore“Two parameters have been added to the Swachh Survekshan 2019 for higher ranking of the cities. One is ODF++, which requires public toilets to be not only neat and clean with good facilities, but also visually appealing. The second part is the Seven Star ranking, which has a city beautification protocol. In our quest to gain that, we are giving rotaries, footpaths, public walls, slum entrances and other places of the city an artistic overhaul. So, whenever someone visits Indore they should feel that it is not only clean, but has beauty and culture too,” Indore Smart City Development Corporation Ltd. Official (ISCDCL) Mahesh Sharma who was in-charge of the project.Just the word 'prison' conjures up an image of an infallible, huge, stark white structure in your brain, complete with barbed wires to keep any prisoner from escaping. Not in Indore, where the Kathakali , Bharatnatyam and Shiv Tandav graffiti will make your jaw drop. “It has become selfie worthy now! No one can even guess that it is a prison wall,” says Rachit Gupta, an arts student. As soon as you step on to the Indore junction, you will be greeted with sights of historical structures like Rajwada, Daly College, Krishnapuri Chhatri or Maheshwar temple. That's because a group of artistes was specially hired to create these 3D paintings.“We wanted to give the travellers and commuters a glimpse of the rich architectural and cultural heritage of the state and city,” shares a painter who helped create the paintings.Image courtesy: Swachh IndoreLikewise, the boundary wall of the Indore Zoo now features famous Jungle Book characters like Mowgli, Bagheera, Sher Khan, Kaa and Balloo. “It is said that Mowgli 's story was inspired by the jungles of Madhya Pradesh. This kind of a painting then adds more value to the Indore Zoo walls,” shares Mahesh.
