Many of them are hopeful the new government of Congress will write off their debts as promised in its manifesto.As per official records, around 2.45 lakh farmers of Indore district have obtained loans of around Rs 7445 crore from cooperative and nationalized banks. Of this, Indore Premier Co-operative bank has distributed around Rs 917 crore to around 60,00 farmers while nationalized banks has given Rs 6528 crore to around 1.86 lakh farmers as agriculture loan to purchase seeds, tools, fertilizer and set up dairy farm. The borrowers include regular and defaulter farmers. When they protested, government tried to suppress the agitation while Congress promising farmers to write off their agriculture loans and provide ‘right’ value of agriculture produce worked in their favour,” Indore president of Bharatiya Kishan Union, Bablu Jadhav told TOI.City-based wholesale grain markets (Mandi) also witnessed a considerable drop in farmers’ footfall. As per official records, Laxmibai Nagar grain market on Thursday witnessed sale of only 1700 quintal paddy against the expectation of 10,000-12,000 quintal for sale. According to official concerned, farmers have stocked crops and not coming to sell them as amount will be deposited in bank accounts and the same will be deposited against agriculture loan.“We will wait for next 10 days for new government to fulfill its promises made to farmers. If they don’t do it, we will launch a protest against Congress as we did against BJP,” Jadhav said.
