Over 20% people suffering from allergic rhinitis in Indore

The major cause of allergy is pollens and dog dander. The cases of dog dander have increased recently as in past years such cause was not recorded.”“The major cause of increase in the allergic cases is anti-allergic medicines that family physicians prescribe to patients.

The study was conducted on sample of 810 people of the age group - six to 63 years.The study revealed that incidents of severe persistent allergic rhinitis are maximum in age group from 21 to 30 years which is 35.43%. Males are found to be more affected than females as the result show - 52: 48.After detailed history, clinical examination of ENT, routine blood counts, absolute eosinophil count were checked. Allergy test by modified prick method was performed on upper limbs on palmer aspect of forearms. Each patient was tested for same 140 allergens.ENT specialist Dr Sudhir Jain and team member of the research said, “Cases of allergic rhinitis have been increasing in Indore by 20% every year. We have found that in most of the cases, the doctors or chemist gives the anti-allergic medicines to the patients that may show its effects initially but later affect the immune system and deteriorates the condition of the patient,” said he.In the research, it has been found that 40% of the allergic patients later develops symptoms of asthma and respiratory diseases and of that around 25% patients suffer from asthma disease.“The trends of allergic rhinitis were mostly found in rural areas due to unavailability of proper medication. However, the incidents have increased in urban areas as well.It has been found that most of the pet lovers are suffering from the allergic rhinitis due to dog dander but are unaware about the fact,” said Dr Jain.
