'Schools should start conducting ECG of every student'

Same in the case in US that one cannot participate in any sports activity without getting ECG report. With this, we can diagnose heart ailments early and save people from sudden cardiac arrest.“There is no age for getting ECG done. Everyone must undergo ECG once and if found healthy, it should be done every five years.

It is important to take immediate steps to decrease the graph of death due to cardiac arrest, which is the most common reason of death worldwide,” he added.Talking about number of heart patients in country, he said, “The number is in crores but worst part is that it is shifting towards younger population.”The Padma Shri awardee said that symptoms of heart disease can be seen in only those who are active but not in those who don’t do regular physical exercise.BOXSharing the case of a 21-year-old youth of Bhopal whose heart beat suddenly reached 270, Dr Singh said, “The patient was suffering from Wolff-Parkinson-White (WPW) syndrome. This is a condition in which there is an extra electrical pathway in heart. The condition can lead to periods of rapid heart rate ( tachycardia ). It can lead to death as well.” Dr Singh and his team diffused the extra electrical pathway to save the patient through a surgery in CHL Hospital on Saturday.He said that WPW syndrome is the common reason of increased heart beat in our country. “One out of 10,000 people globally are suffering from WPW syndrome and they require immediate diagnoses and care,” he added.
