Indore: A simple bet between two individuals has apparently opened up new avenues for Indore Municipal Corporation (IMC).Sudhir Puloria, one of the proprietors of a plastic waste fuel convertor unit installed at trenching ground, convinced his machine operator to use fuel of his plant assuring him of covering all damaged to his bike and more. But from there it was no looking back. “I have been using synthetic petrol produced at this plant for the past one month. My bike runs fine with same mileage of 70km per litre,” said operator Shyamlal. This inspired IMC to plan big on converting scrap plastic waste to fuel. The civic body was facing difficulty in disposal of scrap plastic such as chocolate wrappers, tobacco and pan-masala pouches. This prompted authorities to look for a solution. And, it came as a pleasant surprise.Puloria while speaking to TOI said that they had a contract with IMC to prove that they can produce fuel out of scrap plastic waste. “While most of our machinery is made locally, we had to arrange for a refinery from outside the state to produce fuel out of furnace oil that we get after heating of plastic waste,” he said.Detailing about the process, Puloria said that this facility works on reverse polymerization process and is capable of producing at least 3000 litre fuel a day with 8 tonnes of scrap plastic waste. He said that the entire process takes at least 16 hours. “We have to be careful and give it sufficient time because it is a complex procedure,” he said, adding that they are producing around 2400 litre fuel including diesel, petrol as well as crude oil.“Fuel’s quality is as good as the ones available in market,” he claimed.IMC commissioner Asheesh Singh said that this plastic waste fuel conversion unit has solved the problem of disposal of scrap plastic waste collected on daily basis from city. “The existing conversion facility works fine. Now we have decided to go for a full-fledged plant to treat the entire plastic scrap,” he said.--How the plant works –Plastic, a petroleum byproduct, is first heated indirectly in a vacuum environment in a reactor. It then goes through the process of de-polymerizationThen the product finally undergoes refiningThe ultimate product is synthetic diesel, petrol and crude oilAll impurities are converted to tar.Fuel is used in vehicles, tar would be used in road construction works.--IMC’s GainDaily scrap plastic waste generation in city is 100 tonneIMC hopes to treat it all and produce at least 30,000 litre fuel per day
