INDORE: The use of fly ash bricks in Indore has grown up by over 15 per cent as compared to a year ago owing to pick up in government and private construction activities. The demand for fly ash bricks and other products like blocks and tiles is likely to pick up further but limited supply from power plants and high cost of transportation have restricted the availability, according to Fly Ash Bricks Manufacturers Co-Operative Society. The co-operative society’s vice president Abhishek Purohit said, “Demand for fly ash bricks and other products is growing at a rate of over 15 per cent. Government agencies and real estate projects have started using fly ash products but still they have not switched completely from red bricks.”The government has mandated use of fly ash bricks in its projects and private real estate constructions in all highways, roads, flyovers and government projects such as Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana, AMRUT and Smart Cities Mission.D R Lodhi, superintendent engineer Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY), IMC said, “We are using only fly ash bricks in all our projects under PMAY since we started the construction last year. So far we have used 30 lakh bricks in the construction of 600 units.”IMC has directed their contractors working on PMAY to develop bricks from fly ash at the construction sites, said Lodhi.According to the co-operative society, about 10,000 tonne of fly ash bricks is used in Indore per month and total consumption of fly ash powder in Indore for developing all products of fly ash is around 2 lakh tonne to 3 lakh tonne.Fly bricks manufacturers said construction of fly ash bricks may increase sharply if power plants start supplying smoothly to manufacturers located within the radius of 100 km free of cost or give subsidy on transportation to manufacturers situated within 300 km as mandated by the government.“We have to shell out from our pockets to purchase fly ash powder from power plants as they supply the raw material to close by facilities forcing us to buy at a rate of Rs 300 to 500 per tonne, said Trilok Chand Lakhani, brick manufacturer. In Indore there are close to 50 fly ash brick manufacturers.
