10 kids born with cataract in MP due to momrsquos poor diet

Indore: Around 10% kids in the state are born with cataract due to poor diet of the mother during pregnancy period. However, the fact says that the child should be treated within first three months in which the natural lens should be removed. If eyes are exposed to mobile phones during the period, there are chances that they may suffer from myopia in which the distant object gets blurry. While in youngsters the cause of the disease is frequent consumption of steroids, pain killers and junk food.In most of the newborn, the doctors refuse to diagnose or conduct the surgery claiming that child should be at least a year old. Padma Shri ophthalmologist Dr Tatyarao Pundlikrao Lahane said that usually cataract is diagnosed in old aged people, but from last few years, it is being diagnosed in youngsters as well.Dr Lahane said that in most of the cases of newborn, it has been found that it is due to poor diet of the mother during pregnancy.

While in youngsters the cause of the disease is frequent consumption of steroids, pain killers and junk food.In most of the newborn, the doctors refuse to diagnose or conduct the surgery claiming that child should be at least a year old. However, the fact says that the child should be treated within first three months in which the natural lens should be removed. Later on when the child gets a year old, the new lens should be placed through another surgery till then the child can be given the spectacles.“Earlier the surgery is done and natural lens is removed, the child will get better vision after the second surgery,” said Dr Lahane.He added that along with the diet, parents should ensure that the child doesn’t use mobile phones till the age of 6 years as during this period, the eyes developed. If eyes are exposed to mobile phones during the period, there are chances that they may suffer from myopia in which the distant object gets blurry.
