Water tank collapses during demolition, close shave for staff

INDORE: A worker of Indore Municipal Corporation (IMC) on Sunday had a narrow escape when an overhead tank collapsed and crushed an earth moving machine he was operating, during a demolition drive in Banganga area.Locals also had close shave since they had gathered in the area to watch IMC bringing down decades old tank.Onlookers blamed the staff of not following prescribed sequence of demolition which led to the incident. The driver was just few inches away from the place where the pillar fell down," said a resident of the area.Civic body officials, however, said that the earthmover was placed next to the tank and proper scientific procedure was followed.

"The driver had not anticipated the collapse since the structure was weaker than we thought. Fortunately, no one was hurt in the incident," IMC deputy commissioner MS Chouhan said.A team of some 50 employees and officials were pressed into service for the demolition drive, which started at around 11:30am and continued till 1pm.An official said that the tank was almost 50-year-old and could have collapsed anytime posing risk to lives. "It was already announced dangerous and had to be replaced by a new one," he added.
