Kathakali maestro shows school kids the right mudras

Indore: Demonstrating intricacies of Kathakali and teaching some mudras to school students, noted Kathakali exponent Kalamandalam M Amaljith gave a lecture-demonstration at Kendriya Vidyalaya number 1 on Tuesday.The event was organized by Spic Macay with support from ministry of human resource development. Two such lecture demonstrations were held during the day. He then went ahead to explain the nine rasas of dance and performed a composition explaining the nine emotions.He said that Kathakali was an art form in which stories as old as 450 years can also be performed with flexibility and liberty to the dancer.

He then went ahead to explain the nine rasas of dance and performed a composition explaining the nine emotions.He said that Kathakali was an art form in which stories as old as 450 years can also be performed with flexibility and liberty to the dancer. He also spoke about education from Kerala Kalamandalam, which is why he prefixed his name with Kalamandalam, like everyone else who had received training from the centre.Amaljith in his career has also performed Kathakali to excerpts from Mahabharat and Ramayan and also based on western classics such as Othello and Macbeth.During his lecture demonstration, he also briefed students about history of the dance form and also about other classical dance forms of India. He also performed some traditional Kathakali compositions and explained about the art form through photographs.
