Indore virology lab to have swine flu test facility too

Indore: To avoid delay in getting swine flu test reports, as samples from Indore are currently sent to Bhopal AIIMS, state government has decided to upgrade virology lab , which will be constructed in MGM medical college, to conduct H1N1 tests too.In a recent case, a tourism department official, who was declared dead three days back, was found H1N1 positive on Thursday. This was not the only case as in several other H1N1 deaths, reports got delayed and were received after the patient had already died.According to officials, reports got delayed as samples were sent to Bhopal AIIMS for testing and it took around four days to get report.After cases of swine flu increased in city, state government has decided to upgrade the virology lab from B2 to A2 level so that swine flu tests can be conducted in the city. The new virology lab will be a big relief for Malwa region, Rajgarh, Ujjain, Barwani and Ratlam.According to officials, the lab will be constructed within 6 months. However, to make it A2 level for H1N1 testing, an additional construction will be done, which would take another two months.Currently, the college has received budget of Rs 1.74 crore for the lab, which has been increased to Rs 2.96 crore for the upgrade.According to MGM dean Dr Jyoti Bindal, state government has directed the college to start virology lab. Initially college was getting the lab of B2 level, but now lab of A2 level will be constructed. Two professors were also sent to Vellore medical college for training so that work for the lab can be started soon.“Usually swine flu tests are only conducted in lab with bio safety level 3, but through training, we can conduct the test in bio safety level 2 as well. We have received RS 1.74 crore including Rs 50 lakh for construction, Rs 94 lakh for instruments and Rs 30 lakh for salary.The recruitment process for the lab started Friday.
