Indore short of 800 loos, Swachh brand at stake

Indore: The Swachh image of Indore district that become second in country to get open defecation-free (ODF) tag in January 2016 after Nadia district of West Bengal seems to have been tarnished by the fact that the district still is running short of around 835 toilets The ‘shaken and stirred’ authorities now have set deadline of March 31 to construct the requirement number of toilets to save face.According to Swacch Bharat Mission Gramin’s left out baseline survey, Depalpur tehsil of district is short of 500 toilets followed by 199 in Mhow, 70 in Indore and 66 toilets in Sanwer tehsil. To construct 835 toilets by end of this month, government will provide financial aid of Rs 12,000 each. Officials claimed that of total 835 toilets, construction of 276 units including 191 in Depalpur tehsil has been completed while remaining work is in full swing.“The survey has helped in identification of families, who are most under migrated category and were left out from 2011 Census. Their names were not on the list of beneficiaries. Indore zila panchayat has providing financial assistance of Rs 12,000 each to the families for construction of toilet at their residence. Efforts are made to complete the task by March 31,” CEO Neha Meena told TOI.She added that authorities are monitoring the migrating population and encouraging them to construct and use toilets to do away with the bad practice of open defecation.“The left out baseline survey is nothing to do with ODF tag. With families migrating from other districts and division, more number of toilets needs to be constructed. District administration with help of other departments is taking appropriate steps to ensure the region remain open defecation free,” Meena said while talking to TOI.
