‘Treating wasted water can meet 45% demand’

Indore: Treatment of water going down the drain can help meet 45 per cent of city’s water requirement and reduce the stress on need of fresh water, said experts on the occasion of World Water Day on Friday.Indore gets around 550 MLD (millions of litre per day) of water of which near about 60 per cent is wasted through drains and nullahs, experts said.Aiming to treat waste water, five waste water treatment plants are being developed by Indore Municipal Corporation at different locations of city with different capacities.Sudhindra Mohan Sharma, trustee of Water and Lakes Conservation Committee Trust said, “In Indore about 60 per cent of water gets wasted every day. The treated water can even be used to rejuvenate dying rivers including Kanh and Saraswati.”Experts said currently most of the wasted water is not being tapped and utilized due to lack of proper mechanism.They said that small treatment plants can be set up near rivers so that untreated water mixing into it can be treated before being released into the river.Highlighting measures for water treatment, speaker Tapas Saraswati, water treatment specialist said that countries like Australia and Singapore are using technologies to treat waste water into drinking water. If this water is tapped and purified, it can meet 45 per cent of the requirement that can easily be used for developing road side green patches, car wash and other uses.”These waste water treatment plants are likely to be functional in about 18 months.Gunwant Joshi, environment expert said, “This is the high time that we realize and get aware of the measures to reuse and treat water.
