800 govt officials apply for exemption from poll duty

Indore: The district election office has so far received over 800 applications of government employees seeking exemption from poll duty on various grounds.There are 35,800 government and semi-government employees including 1800 Class I, 10,700 Class II, 10,900 Class III and 5600 Class IV employees, as per official records. The remaining employees will have to work only for three days- two-day training and on the day of voting- officials said.“I have written to all departments concerned requesting their active participation in the elections and not to move unnecessary applications by their employees seeking exemption from poll duty,” district election officer Lokesh Kumar Jatav told TOI. So, the district election office is left with 26,000 employees against total requirement of 21,900 employees to perform election duty.Though at present the authority has surplus number of government employees to meet the demands, the increasing number of applications seeking exemption from poll duty has created a problem for it.The authority requires 3300 employees as booth level officers and for flying squad, static surveillance team, video surveillance team and video viewing team, who will have to work for around next two months till Indore will go for polls on May 19.
