There is alarm over a bird-flu outbreak in Indore even as Indore battles the Covid pandemic.

Officials say poultries are so far untouched by the infection and safe for consumption.
The outbreak came to notice when 20 crows dropped dead on the Daly College campus on December 29. Vets sent samples to a virology lab in Bhopal, which confirmed H5N8 avian influenza, deputy director, Dr Pramod Sharma, said on Friday. The area has been sanitized and made out of bounds.

At least 50 crows have died due to H5N8 avian influenza, officials said on Friday. The health department will carry out a door-to-door survey on Saturday in a 5km radius of the areas where the carcasses were found to check if anyone has a fever or any other symptoms of the infection, an official said. The veterinary department is already taking steps to contain the virus.

Over the next three days, 30 more crow carcasses were found. The source of the infection is yet to be identified, but migrant birds may have brought the virus, said experts.

The World Health Organisation says human infection with the H5N8 virus cannot be excluded, but the likelihood is low.
According to officials, no other bird, apart from crows, has been found dead at Daly College. “We are keeping a watch on crow colonies in the city. Nearby districts have been alerted,” said an official.
