Six persons were tested positive for B.1.1.7 variant of SARS-COV-2 virus commonly known as super-spreaders UK variant in a genome sequencing report released on Friday morning.

Of those six persons, three were from a single-family residing in Asrawad Khurd, where around a couple of days back 26 cases were reported from a locality. Interestingly, none of the patients testing positive for UK strain, have any international travel history and five of them were asymptomatic.

MGM dean Prof Dr Sanjay Dixit, “Six persons are tested positive of the new UK strain in the district including three from a family in Asrawad Khurd.” The other three are from different areas in the city. The positive cases belonged to all the categories selected for the sampling, said Dr Dixit.

These include a 19-year-old male of Prem Nagar, a 49-year-old male of Gulmohar Extension, a 40-year-old male of Basantpuri Colony, and a 37-year-old male, a 30-year-old male, and a 26-year-old male, and all residents of Asrawad Khurd.

The reports were found positive from 105 samples sent to the National Centre for disease control (NCDC) on February 20 to decode the mystery behind the re-surge in the cases from mid-February. Of those 105 samples, 51 were from a private lab, 27 were from the Virology laboratory of MGMMC, 17 from another private lab in the city, 3 from Burhanpur district and 7 from a lab situated in Mumbai.

Detailing about the new strain of the virus Dr Dixit said, “This new strain is more contagious and understood to be super-spreader. So, the precautionary measures should be followed properly.”
On the point of death caused by this new strain Dr Dixit added, “In UK, the strain B.1.1.7 is understood for causing more death. But, in our country, almost zero deaths are reported so far in people identified with this new strain.”

The report received on Friday morning sent the authorities on their toes with the divisional commissioner holding a meeting with medical college authorities to review the situation.
When CMHO Dr Pravin Jadia was asked about the measures taken in this regard he said, “We have started contact tracing of the patients and they are kept in home isolation. Around 100 samples of their contacts have been taken for testing in the day.”

Earlier a 32-year-old man was tested positive with UK strain in Rau in January. He tested positive around 20 days after returning from the UK.
