ABVP protest at DAVV

The student unions are now demanding extension of date for registration of voters and better publicity of the elections in each college. "The senate is an important body for the university and each student must have a say in it. The annual reports prepared by the executive council are sent to the varsity court for approval. The university published notification on April 14, stating that the last date for voter registration was April 17, with two holidays falling between the two dates. Students claimed that since the elections were taking place after 30 years, a wide scale drive should be held to ensure maximum participation of students in the process.

Indore: Alleging that the senate elections or the varsity court elections at the DAVV are being held unethically, around 200 members of Akhil Bhartiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) staged a protest at DAVV's Nalanda campus situated at RNT road on Friday.Students raised slogans and demanded extension of the last date of voter registration of the graduates from DAVV colleges.After putting forward their grievance before DAVV vice-chancellor Prof Narendra Dhakad, students were given an assurance that the university will take legal advice regarding the issue.Students also plan to move the high court regarding the matter.In the protest which lasted around three hours, students raised questions on the method adopted by the university for senate elections. Students claimed that since the elections were taking place after 30 years, a wide scale drive should be held to ensure maximum participation of students in the process."The senate is an important body for the university and each student must have a say in it. The university published notification on April 14, stating that the last date for voter registration was April 17, with two holidays falling between the two dates. Due to this, only 86 students were able to file their registration forms, out of the 5 lakh graduates of the university from 1987 till 2017," Rohin Roy, national secretary of ABVP said.The senate is an apex body of the university which approves annual reports, audit reports etc. The annual reports prepared by the executive council are sent to the varsity court for approval. The 70 member body comprises students along with other members like professors, college deans, city Mayor of his representative, MLAs, vice-chancellors, etc.Applications were first invited for registration of voters in December 2016, however, till April 2017, only 86 graduates had registered. The student unions are now demanding extension of date for registration of voters and better publicity of the elections in each college.
