Indore: Four deaths in quick succession in the ICU ward number 27 on the 5th floor of MY Hospital on the intervening night of June 21 and 22, was altogether a different experience for the duty doctor, stretcher-cum-ward boy and security guard posted there."As four persons were declared dead in very short period of time, it had become a bit difficult to manage stretchers to take the bodies to the ground floor and hand them over to the relatives," said a stretcher-cum-ward boy Ramesh Ingle. He showed ignorance upon if anything 'wrong' had happened that led to the death of four persons in 20 minutes."I was given the instruction to take the bodies to the ground floor and I just followed the same. Whenever any death is reported, a chaos among the relatives is natural. Four persons dying in around 20-30 minutes could have only been the difference," said the class IV employee.Similar were the views of security guard Kalu Batham. He said, "As attendants of all four deceased started gathering in the ward, I called in other staff for help in maintaining peace. The things however normalised soon after the attendants vacated the ward."He claimed having no knowledge if there was any disturbance in the oxygen supply system or other negligence on the treatment part."It's an ICU ward and we do not allow anybody to enter, except when it is needed or allowed by the doctors. As four patients were declared dead, their relatives were called in to take the bodies out. I was monitoring things to avert any untoward situation, which is likely in case of anybody dies, while undergoing treatment," said Batham. The doctor Anurag Kujur, who certified all four deaths between 4.10 am and 4.30am, termed the incident as routine case. "Usually, critical cases arrive in ICU ward as daily admission. All four patients were intubated at the ground floor," said Dr Kujur. He said that no one was pressurised to take the body immediately. After certification, even the attendants usually force us to hand over the body. "All the machines installed in the ward are in working condition," Dr Kujur concluded.
