NHRC shoots notices to MP chief secy over MY Hospital deaths

INDORE: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) on Tuesday issued notice to Madhya Pradesh chief secretary over deaths of 11 patients at Indore's MY Hospital allegedly due to disruption of oxygen supply.NHRC cited news reports about the deaths and subsequent events and asked the chief secretary to submit a detailed report on the matter within four weeks.The NHRC took suo motu cognizance of media report that 11 patients died at MY Hospital as the oxygen supply mysteriously snapped for around 15 minutes between 3 am and 4 am on the intervening night of June 21 and 22. "The contents of the news report, if true, indicate gross negligence by the hospital authorities amounting to violation of right to life of the patients, who were in the medical care of a government run hospital," the NHRC said.TOI investigations had revealed that at least four patients kept on respiratory support died within a period of 20 minutes in ward 27 of the ICU, giving strength to the fact that oxygen supply was disrupted.The hospital administration termed the deaths as routine and denied that the oxygen supply was disrupted.The NHRC has asked the chief secretary to submit a specific report whether 10-20 deaths a day, as mentioned in the news report are occurring at the MY Hospital, due to lack of infrastructure or any kind of negligence and whether the government has taken any steps to address the issue.TOI had also reported that the hospital administration had seized records of the deaths and presented filtered data to the media.The NHRC also took cognizance of the move by the hospital administration, while referring to death of two children due to supply of nitrous oxide instead of oxygen in May 2016.
