Indore: Bogged down by the ragging controversy, MGM Medical College on Tuesday decided to form anti-ragging squads at the hostel level to curb excesses allegedly perpetrated by senior students on juniors. The decision came after suspension of 29 students of 2015 batch for ragging junior students in the hostels."The hostel-level squads will help in giving quick response to the complaints of ragging. This committee will be reporting to the college-level committee," a senior college official said.It was noticed by the college authorities that ragging was reported mostly in medical hostels where monitoring by staff was negligible at odd hours.A complaint of ragging had jolted the college when junior students approached the college's anti-ragging squad and lodged online complaints on Centre's anti-ragging website. They later approached Sanyigotaganj police station, who sought a reply from college dean Dr Sharad Thora. As the matter escalated, a meeting of the nine-member anti-ragging committee of the college was summoned and victims were asked to give details of their complaint. The juniors claimed that they were slapped by seniors for no reason. Two of the students submitted medical certificates to prove that they sustained injuries in the ears after the seniors thrashed them.Seniors made them do sit-ups at odd hours and forced them to wear uniforms designated by them in college, thus violating their rights. The committee had recorded statements of the students, who reportedly apologized for their behavior. Subsequently, 29 students were suspended from the college for 30 days and asked to leave the hostels. The police is yet to act on the complaint of the students. City superintendent of police (Sanyogitaganj) SK Tomar told TOI, "We have forwarded the complaint to the college's anti-ragging committee. We can't initiate action against the students till we get a response from the committee."
