Tawang declared cleanest district in entire northeast

ITANAGAR: Tawang district in Arunachal Pradesh has been adjudged as the cleanest district in the entire northeast by Swachh Survekshan Gramin (SSG)-2018.The SSG-2018 was conducted in 698 districts from August 1 to 31 by an independent agency engaged by the Union ministry of drinking water & sanitation. Swachh Bharat Mission (Gramin) mission director Sentum Yomcha received the award on behalf of the state government. "The Tawang DC and the team of SBM(G) deserves special appreciation for making the district the first ODF district in the state in September last year and also making it the cleanest district in the entire northeast a year after," said chief minister Pema Khandu It may be mentioned here that Arunachal Pradesh achieved Open Defecation Free (ODF) status on December 31, 2017. The SSG-2018 was launched in the state by chief minister Pema Khandu on July 25 this year followed by its district-level launch by respective deputy commissioners under the guidance of chief secretary Satya Gopal. In the current year, the state government has allocated Rs 30 crore in the budget for reconstruction of defunct toilets and addressing waste management problem in the rural administrative centres.The fortnight-long Swachhata Hi Seva (SHS)-2018, which was launched in the entire state on September 15 with the support of governor BD Mishra and chief minister Pema Khandu, finally culminated on Tuesday.

The evaluation process was based on certain parameters - direct observation of sanitation in public places (30%) citizen feedback (35%) and service-level progress on sanitation as per Swachh Bharat Mission (Gramin), Integrated Management Information System (IMIS) (35%).Union minister for drinking water & sanitation Uma Bharti gave away the award to the state at a function in New Delhi on Tuesday on the occasion of the 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, a source said. Swachh Bharat Mission (Gramin) mission director Sentum Yomcha received the award on behalf of the state government."The Tawang DC and the team of SBM(G) deserves special appreciation for making the district the first ODF district in the state in September last year and also making it the cleanest district in the entire northeast a year after," said chief minister Pema Khandu It may be mentioned here that Arunachal Pradesh achieved Open Defecation Free (ODF) status on December 31, 2017. The state government had supported the objectives of SBM(G) by giving funds exclusively for reconstruction of defunct toilets and upgrading insanitary ones.The government had earlier provided an additional incentive of Rs 8,000 per individual household latrine in addition to central allocation of Rs 12,000 per latrine. In the current year, the state government has allocated Rs 30 crore in the budget for reconstruction of defunct toilets and addressing waste management problem in the rural administrative centres.The fortnight-long Swachhata Hi Seva (SHS)-2018, which was launched in the entire state on September 15 with the support of governor BD Mishra and chief minister Pema Khandu, finally culminated on Tuesday.
