British Council signs MoU to improve ties with Arunachal

ITANAGAR: The British Council and Arunachal Pradesh government on Sunday inked a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to strengthen educational and cultural cooperation between the state and the United Kingdom. "British Council director Alan Gemmell said, "The new agreement will see us support Khandu's ambitions for young people in the state. The MoU also supports the vision of the chief minister in enhancing human resource capacity-building in higher education and subsequently in school education." The MoU was inked at Tawang on the sidelines of the Tawang Festival.The MoU, which also celebrates the British Council's 70th anniversary in India, would pave the way for 50 faculty members from higher education government institutions of Arunachal being trained by the British Council every year. The MoU will also support the knowledge ambitions and economic growth of the state.The memorandum was signed by British Council director Alan Gemmell and Arunachal Pradesh higher and technical education director Dr Tayek Talom, in the presence of chief minister Pema Khandu .

The MoU will also support the knowledge ambitions and economic growth of the state.The memorandum was signed by British Council director Alan Gemmell and Arunachal Pradesh higher and technical education director Dr Tayek Talom, in the presence of chief minister Pema Khandu . The MoU was inked at Tawang on the sidelines of the Tawang Festival.The MoU, which also celebrates the British Council's 70th anniversary in India, would pave the way for 50 faculty members from higher education government institutions of Arunachal being trained by the British Council every year. The programme will start in December 2018, official sources said. Of the 50 faculty members, 30 will be from government colleges, 10 from governmental polytechnic institutes, eight from central institutions established in the state and two from officers of the higher education administration. Apart from this, the British Council will impart training in the English language to 50 students from higher and technical education institutes annually.The MoU will also work towards improving English communication among civil servants of the state and help in developing capacity-building initiatives. It will also support improvements in the teaching of mathematics and science, hold capacity-building programmes for faculty and senior administrators of higher education institutions, and seek to increase mobility of students and academics of the state.The British Council has had a long association with both Arunachal Pradesh and the northeast. It recently signed a MoU with the North Eastern Council to strengthen educational and cultural cooperation in all eight states of the region.Chief minister Pema Khandu said, "The MoU with British Council will enhance educational and cultural opportunities for young people from Arunachal Pradesh, connecting them to international expertise and ideas. I am grateful for the British Council's initiative here in the state and across the Northeast."British Council director Alan Gemmell said, "The new agreement will see us support Khandu's ambitions for young people in the state. We have been inspired by the vision the chief minister has for Arunachal and will work to support the state's world-class festivals, such as the ones at Ziro and Tawang. These events help promote the rich cultural heritage of the state globally. The MoU also supports the vision of the chief minister in enhancing human resource capacity-building in higher education and subsequently in school education."
