Lekang tribal bodies begin indefinite strike

ITANAGAR: An indefinite bandh called by three tribal bodies, and began from Monday morning, has affected normal life in Lekang constituency under Namsai district of Arunachal Pradesh . The tribal bodies — United People’s Movement of Lekang, Lekang Indigenous Forum and Deori Tribal Students’ Union — have called the indefinite bandh, demanding permanent residential certificates (PRC) be issued to the Deori community living in Lekang area of the district.Namsai SP Ankit Kumar Singh said the bandh has affected normal life but the police are on the lookout to prevent any untoward incident. The district police chief termed the bandh as ‘illegal’ as neither due process has been followed nor permission sought form the district administration. The bandh should be called off immediately, he said. The report would then be placed in the cabinet, Rebia said, adding that the decision of the cabinet on the report would be placed in the three-day state assembly session scheduled to begin from February 21.

However, the call is likely to be withdrawn soon because of reported disputes among the three tribal bodies, the SP added.Lekang BJP mandal president Jugesh Taye said the bandh was totally uncalled for as chief minister Pema Khandu has already indicted that the state cabinet would address the issue by the second week of February. Condemning the bandh on behalf of the ruling BJP, Taye said the state government is awaiting the final report on the issue by the joint high powered committee headed by senior minister Nabam Rebia. The report would then be placed in the cabinet, Rebia said, adding that the decision of the cabinet on the report would be placed in the three-day state assembly session scheduled to begin from February 21. The bandh should be called off immediately, he said.
