Itanagar, Oct 2 (PTI) Arunachal Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Chowna Mein Saturday said ‘Swachh Bharat Abhiyan’ marks the realisation of the dreams and visions of Mahatma Gandhi for a clean and hygienic India. Speaking at the valedictory function of the walkathon and cyclothon events organised to mark Gandhi Jayanti, Mein called upon people to not only enjoy the freedom which the country had achieved because of the toils and sacrifices of the freedom fighters but also to perform their duties. “To maintain hygienic conditions and to keep our surroundings clean and green is one of the biggest responsibilities we have towards Mother Earth, and the future generation. “Swachh Bharat Abhiyan is a realisation of Mahatma Gandhi’s dreams and visions for a clean and hygienic India which Prime Minister Narendra Modi had made a mass movement by launching the ‘Abhiyan’ (mission) from the Red Fort on August 15, 2014,” Mein said. The second phase of the Swachh Bharat Mission-Urban and Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation was launched by PM Modi on Friday. He also asked the people to uphold the Gandhian principles of non-violence, truth, brotherhood, and peace. The deputy chief minister urged the people to join the ‘Fit India Movement’ initiated by Union Sports and Youth Affairs Ministry and lauded the Itanagar Smart City Corporation besides the capital administration for organising the walkathon and cyclothon events. Mein also appreciated the state police, the civil administration, and the state narcotic cell for their fight against drug addiction and called upon all sections of the society to join hands to make Arunachal Pradesh a drug-free state. Earlier, Mein flagged off the cyclothon and walkathon events from the tri-junction near Gandhi Park at Niti Vihar here and also paid floral tributes to the Father of Nation along with hosts of ministers and MLAs. About 50 cyclists and hundreds of students participated in the cyclothon and walkathon events. The event was also organised at Raj Bhawan here. Speaking on the occasion virtually from Aizawl in Mizoram, Governor Brig (Retd) Dr. B D Mishra urged the people to promote and abide by Gandhian values. He also called for strengthening the spirit of non-violence as endorsed by Mahatma Gandhi. Highlighting that cleanliness is most important for physical well-being and a healthy environment, the governor said, it is essential for everyone to learn about cleanliness, hygiene, sanitation, and the various diseases that are caused due to poor hygiene. The BJP celebrated the occasion by organising social service at the Buddhist Gompa here while the party’s state unit president Biyuram Waghe and Lok Sabha MP Tapir Gao paid floral tributes to Gandhi. Waghe also formally unveiled the ‘Wall of Kindness’ at the party office here and appealed to party workers to donate unused household items which can be picked up by those in need. PTI UPL MM MM
