So the government decided to come out with this new initiative of the weather based insurance scheme for fruits and vegetables. Jaipur: In a first of its kind, the fruit and vegetable farmers would also get crop insurance cover in Rajasthan. Currently the crop insurance scheme covers only cereals and grains. The Meteorological department had already set up weather monitoring stations at almost all districts and these stations are daily reporting the weather. The compensation would be decided based on the fluctuations from the normal temperature which would adversely affect the productivity of a fruit or vegetable.Agriculture minister Prabhulal Saini said many farmer organizations have been demanding inclusion of fruits and vegetable farmers under the cover of a crop insurance scheme. Not only that the loss of crop is assessed not physically but based on weather factors.Agriculture minister Prabulal Saini on Monday issued the tender for the same and according to the department officials, the tender would be completed by the end of this month. An official privy to the initiative said for other agriculture crops like cereals and grains, the government had sufficient empirical data available but for fruits and vegetables not such data is available with the department. So, the initiative launched by the name, Modified Weather Based Crop Insurance scheme, the compensation paid to the famers of fruits and vegetables would be based on the fluctuations in weather, said OSD in the agriculture department Ram Gopal Sharma. He said the major fruits included under the scheme are orange, kinnow, lemon, mango, pomegranate and Indian gooseberry (amla) while the vegetable include tomato, ladies finger, cucumber, brinjal, bottle gourd, bitter gourd, Indian round gourd (tinda) etc.He said the weather fluctuations from normal on either way (less or high) would decide the quantum of compensation to the farmers of a fruit or vegetable.
