Rajasthan to bring up proposed medical colleges at Barmer and Sikar

within one yearwithin one yearJAIPUR: After being denied permission for two proposed medical colleges in Sikar and Barmer, medical education department has decided to write to Medical Council of India (MCI) seeking its permission to start these proposed medical colleges from next academic year (2019-20).The medical education department is taking giant strides now to give boost to medical education in the state by bringing up the proposed medical colleges at Barmer and Sikar up to the MCI normsThese two proposed medical colleges are among the seven such colleges announced in 2013-14 by the Centre. Rajasthan will now have 13 government medical colleges as there are eight existing colleges in the districts of Jaipur, Jodhpur, Kota, Udaipur, Ajmer, Bikaner, Jhalawar along with the RUHS Medical College in Jaipur.In December 2017, MCI’s executive committee held its meeting on proposed medical colleges across the country. But, now we have decided to bring up the proposed medical colleges at Barmer and Sikar up to the MCI norms. So that we will be able to start these two medical colleges also in next year,” said Anand Kumar, principal secretary, medical education department.The medical education department got the permission for five medical colleges in Pali, Dungarpur, Churu, Bharatpur and Bhilwara. But, the MCI recently had disapproved the two proposed medical colleges as they had not fulfilled the MCI norms.

However, persistent efforts made by the medical education department over the past few months, has managed to get permission for five medical colleges, which will become operation from upcoming academic session (2017-18).“We have got the permission for five medical colleges. But, now we have decided to bring up the proposed medical colleges at Barmer and Sikar up to the MCI norms. So that we will be able to start these two medical colleges also in next year,” said Anand Kumar, principal secretary, medical education department.The medical education department got the permission for five medical colleges in Pali, Dungarpur, Churu, Bharatpur and Bhilwara. In the meeting, it was discussed that in Barmer, the building of proposed medical college was under construction. Departments of Anatomy, Physiology, and Biochemistry were not available. Deficiency of faculty was 100%. Teaching beds were inadequate. Bed occupancy was 9% on day of assessment, audiometry and speech therapy was not available, preoperative beds were not available, septic labour room was not available, no static X-ray machine was found were some of the deficiencies which were found during assessment by MCI team.More or less similar situation was found in Sikar’s proposed medical college. Departments of Anatomy, Physiology, Biochemistry were not found available, audiometry was not available, lecture theatres, central library, central photography section, students’ hostels, residents’ hostel, nurses’ hostel, residential quarters, common rooms for boys and girls were not found available. Also, pharmaco vigilance committee and gender harassment committee were not constituted at the time of assessment.Now, the medical education department has a challenging task to fulfil all the requirement of medical colleges up to the norms of MCI in one year to make these two medical colleges operation in a year.
