EC urged to ensure truckers’ voting rights

The delegation informed the Election Commission that there are around 1.25 crore drivers in country out of which 90 lakh drive carriers with national permit and have never ever got the opportunity to cast their vote. As the number of such persons not exercising their right is significant, it is pertinent that the commission considers permitting them to use online apps or e-vote facility during election from where ever they are located.The commission comprising chief election commissioner O P Rawat, election commissioners Sunil Arora and Ashok Lavasa, and their team of officers in principal agreed to examine the issue. Jaipur: A delegation of the PHD Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PHDCCI), Rajasthan led by its president Anil Khaitan, called on chief election commissioner O P Rawat at Nirvachan Sadan demanding that the truck drivers who were out of their constituency because of the nature of their duty be given voting facility.The delegation highlighted the concern of truck drivers were not been able to exercise their right to vote during elections because of the nature of their duty, which keeps them on the road for several months altogether. But, the commission that this would require a change in the rules governing elections and would take some time to be implemented.Workshop on EVM for returning officersOne-day workshop will be held on Friday on first-level checking of EVMs and VVPAT machines for the district returning officers, deputy returning officers and FLC in-charge.Chief electoral officer of Rajasthan Ashwini Bhagat said that the workshop will begin at the conference hall of the secretariat at 10 am in which senior officials of the Election Commission will be present and give detailed directions on other issues related to the election preparations, he said.
