Cartist New Initiative- Project Rebirth 'Dismantle a Mercedes into furniture'

  • | Tuesday | 10th July, 2018

Globally and nationally, environmental concerns in the auto industry is a huge driving force to shift towards auto parts recycling initiatives, thereby increasing sustainability. It is given that using recycled parts than manufacturing new ones can save an estimated 80 million barrels of oil per year. Moreover, scrap metal can reduce the air pollution generated by steel mill by up to 86 percent.

Cartist, in its new endeavour "Project Rebirth" aims to conserve resources and promote sustainability by creating innovative products using automotive parts. Towards this initiative, we plan to dismantle a Mercedes E220 1996 to create a new line of automobile inspired furniture. Each car is created with nearly 30,000 parts and these auto parts will be used to create user-friendly furniture. We strongly believe that such initiatives would exemplify sustainable living in the true sense by giving a strong & positive message to society about the importance of reuse and protecting our environment. To execute the project Rebirth, Cartist has bought a scrap car- 1996 Mercedes Model, the car will be completely taken apart and then -re-design these parts to creating something unique and usable.  These exclusive auto parts designs will be curated using sustainable paints, such as watercolours, wood from old packages, etc. The process of dismantling the car will entail a series of steps, firstly, preparing a car by disconnecting engine hoses and wires, transmission, draining oil and transmission fluids.  Secondly, car’s engine will be removed and unbolting the mounts and stripping the engine compartment and subsequently stripping the undercarriage. Finally, dismantling the body of the car by removing the bumpers, and trunk hood, removing windows, doors and rear panels and roof. Lastly, removing the vehicle’s interior by removing the dashboard, seat, carpets.
