Power bill above Rs 20k to be paid only online

Jaipur: Jaipur Vidut Vitaran Nigam (JVVNL) would accept only online or digital mode power bills of over Rs 20,000 from July 15. This scheme is only for consumers whose bill amounts to less than Rs 20,000.Besides, the company has also introduced a mobile app to pay power bills to cater to the demand of the rural customers. Out of about 40 lakh consumers under the JVVNL, about 10 lakh consumers come under this category. MD JVVNL RG Gupta said this decision was taken in consonance with the union government initiative to promote digital payments and part of the company’s initiative to reduce administrative cost of bill collection.He said all power bills except agricultural connections over Rs 20,000 will be collected only by online or digital mode. In case they fail to comply with the order, such consumers will have to pay a penalty of Rs 2000 to large industrial power (LIP) connections and Rs 500 for others.However, he said in exceptional cases the executive engineer of the concerned area has the power to relax this condition.The JVVNL had introduced a lottery system to reward domestic consumers who pay their bills online and 100 such consumers selected every month through lottery were given discounts of Rs 5000 each in their next bills to promote online payments system.

He said the company would save about Rs 80 lakh per month as it spends Rs 8 per bill collection in the cash mode of payment.The order issued by the JVVNL said the decision was not only taken in line with the union government policy of encouraging a cashless economy but the Rajasthan Energy Regulatory Commission (RERC) in its tariff order for the financial year 2018-19 has given the mandate to encourage the consumers to pay their energy bills online or via digital mode.Gupta said any collection agency (e-mitra, data Infosys, sub divisional cashier) would not accept off line payment for amount more than Rs 20,000 (cash, demand draft or cheque) from July 15.
