Late monsoon takes toll on Kharif sowing

JAIPUR: The late onset of monsoon in the state has taken a toll on the sowing of the Kharif crops in the state. So far only 54.6% of the targeted crop areas have been put under cultivation in the state.Cereals, pulses and oilseeds are the major crops cultivated during the Kharif season. In the case of pulses, the average area cultivated so far is just 54%. The data shows farmers prefer maize which has been cultivated over 82% of the target area while small millets and paddy is lagging at 34% and 43% respectively. The farmers’ preference among the pulses this time seems to be ‘chaula’ which has achieved about 84% of the targeted area followed by Urad at 72%.

In all these major segments the sowing falls short of the target. But the department is hopeful that with the revival of monsoon, the sowing would pick up momentum in the coming days.According to the data available with the Joint Director Statistics, till July 13 the average area of the major cereals comprising paddy, jowar, bajra, maize and small millets cultivated are 59.1% of the targeted area. The data shows farmers prefer maize which has been cultivated over 82% of the target area while small millets and paddy is lagging at 34% and 43% respectively. In the case of pulses, the average area cultivated so far is just 54%. The farmers’ preference among the pulses this time seems to be ‘chaula’ which has achieved about 84% of the targeted area followed by Urad at 72%. The famers seem to have cold shouldered moth which was sown only in an area of 27.5% of the target set. Among oil seeds, farmers’ preference has been ground nut and soybean. These two crops have achieved about 85% sowing, according to the official data.
