JAIPUR: The Gupta family had hired their house maid Priya through a leading service agency about four months ago. But neither the family nor the agency had sent her documents for the police verification.The officials told TOI that Priya Sahoo alias Parveena was paid Rs 16,000 a month by the couple to take care of the house and look after their granddaughter. She had a few weeks ago even travelled with them to Mumbai. "The placement agency is located in Jhotwara. We asked for the documents but the agency directors had no clue about Priya's verification details. In fact, they relied on her previous employee's words," the official said, adding that it was only during the initial investigation it was revealed that Priya Sahoo was not her real name.There are about 100 placement agencies in the city that provide house keepers, drivers, maids and guards. According to the police many of these agencies hire servants from far away states like West Bengal , and foreign countries like Nepal. "Some agencies do have a credible record as they don't want their credibility to be hit by such incidents, but small agencies are least bothered," the official said.According to Jaipur police the service agencies and their customers must ensure that police verification is carried out before they hire maids, especially house maids.
