Play Agnipath on the freedom struggle of Subhash Chandra Bose staged in Jaipur

A play titled Agnipath based on the freedom struggle of Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose was staged at Ravindra Manch, recently. Bose came fourth in the ICS examination and was selected, but he didn’t want to work under an alien government which would mean serving the British. The play received a warm applause from the audience. In 1927, after being released from prison, Bose became general secretary of the Congress party and worked with Jawaharlal Nehru for independence.The play also highlights how he formed the Indian National Army with Indian war prisoners who had served with the British Indian army. Soon, Bose was elected as the President of All India Youth Congress.A scene from the playThe play then shows that how in a roundup of nationalists in 1925, Bose was arrested and sent to prison in Mandalay, where he contracted tuberculosis.

Directed by Dr Chandradeep Hada and written by Mahendra Jain, the play was presented by Actor Theatre @Rajasthan, a repertory and performing arts organisation in Jaipur.Dr Chandradeep Hada as Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose (Shalini Maheshwari/BCCL)The story of the play begins with Bose leaving for England in 1919 with a promise to his father that he would appear in the Indian Civil Services examination. Bose came fourth in the ICS examination and was selected, but he didn’t want to work under an alien government which would mean serving the British. While he did work for few years, he resigned from his civil service job in 1921 and returned to India where he started a newspaper Swaraj and took charge of publicity for the Bengal Provincial Congress Committee. Soon, Bose was elected as the President of All India Youth Congress.A scene from the playThe play then shows that how in a roundup of nationalists in 1925, Bose was arrested and sent to prison in Mandalay, where he contracted tuberculosis. The play tried to convey a message that much like Mahatma Gandhi and Jawaharlal Nehru, Netaji also played a crucial role in freeing the country from the clutches of the British rule in his own unique way.Bose’s character was played by Chandradeep (director) himself. The play received a warm applause from the audience.
