IT dept finds unaccounted jewellery worth over Rs 12cr

The investigations in the past cases suggested that Jaipur becomes an easy transit route for gold smuggling via Dubai. “Prima facie, it was also been established that the jewellery was brought from Mumbai after it was shown in an exhibition,” said an officer.According to IT department officials, this jewellery is related to some jewellery exhibition and was brought to Jaipur from Mumbai.

Jaipur: After initiating a survey following arrival of big haul of gold and silver jewellery , the sleuths of income tax on Friday said that they have unearthed an unaccounted income of more than Rs 12 cr while their survey was on.Officials were on the job of verification of the jewellery which arrived from Mumbai on the eve of Independence Day at the Jaipur airport.Senior officers of the income tax said that they have surveyed nine jewellers and found that the jewellery worth over nearly Rs 12 crore was unaccounted. “At least 50 jewellers were quizzed. Many could show the valid papers of their jewellery while for those who could not show it in their accounts, action is being taken,” said a senior officer of income tax, Jaipur.“We are still calculating and have invited various jewellers to show the valid papers,” said an officer with the investigation wing of I-T department.On August 14, income tax department was alerted after a haul of 200 kg of gold and 3,500 kg of silver from the air cargo. “Prima facie, it was also been established that the jewellery was brought from Mumbai after it was shown in an exhibition,” said an officer.According to IT department officials, this jewellery is related to some jewellery exhibition and was brought to Jaipur from Mumbai. The department has not seized the jewellery but took it under custody till further investigations. “It was not the seizure. The whole stock was kept with us to ascertain the quantum of the unaccounted stock by different jewellers,” the officer added.The department is investigating whether the jewellery traders have the records of its origin with them or not.Sources added that the delivery of this jewellery was in the name of a jeweller located near Savitri Path in Jaipur’s Bapu Nagar.Senior officers added that it was biggest ever unearthing of the unaccounted stock of the jewellery of silver and gold. At least 10 different teams worked since August 14 and many are still engaged in the verification work.Box:50 jewellers have been quizzed so far‘Haul not part of smuggling racket’Senior officers of the investigation wing of the Income Tax department said that the haul of gold that came through cargo had nothing to do with the smuggling. “They have officially booked it for Jaipur from Mumbai and all the gold and silver ornaments were returning from an exhibition from Mumbai. The investigations in the past cases suggested that Jaipur becomes an easy transit route for gold smuggling via Dubai. Passengers coming from Dubai and carrying gold jewellery is properly checked.Iron, fountain pen, battery and other items used to hide goldThe investigations in the recent seizures of the gold from the Jaipur airport suggested that the peddlers used a small iron, fountain pen, battery, torch and other items to conceal gold.Past seizures at Jaipur airportMay 2018: Two youths were detained by the customs department at the Jaipur airport with a possession of 300 gram of gold. Both had arrived from Dubai from where people as couriers are sent to smuggle gold in India via Jaipur and Chennai airports.April 2018: Two passengers were detained by the customs department at the Jaipur airport with a possession of 155 grams of gold biscuits. Both the passengers had come from Dubai.August 2017: A passenger was detained by the officials of Department of Revenue Intelligence for a possession of nearly 2.22 kg of gold
