JAIPUR: Chief of Army Staff Gen Bipin Rawat will be in Jaipur on September 22 to participate in the centenary celebrations to commemorate hundred years of liberation of Haifa in Israel by the Indian troops in 1918. At the same time, Haifa Memorial will also be inaugurated in the state capital, along with a parade by 61 Cavalry. Exactly a hundred years ago, a mounted cavalry force comprising of the Jodhpur Lancers, the Hyderabad Lancers and the Mysore Lancers, had liberated the city of Haifa from the occupation of Turkey in an unparalleled mounted cavalry charge. A large number of soldiers from Rajasthan fought in this battle, including the leader of the charge, Major Dalpat Singh who was killed in this bold action. The Battle of Haifa is being commemorated in Israel, Delhi and Jaipur.Lieutenant General Cherish Mathson, Army Commander Sapta Shakti Command, elaborating on the famous Battle of Haifa added, “Present day 61Cavalry Regiment is the new avatar of amalgamation of the Jodhpur and Mysore Lancers and hence the custodian of this great historical heritage. It has always been commemorated in Israel and they lay a wreath every year there at Hindu Cemetery, a memorial to acknowledge the sacrifice of the Indian soldiers in the Battle of Haifa. However, this is relevant for Indians as well because in broad daylight, our soldiers launched an offensive armed with only swords and spears. While many Turks and Germans were captured, only eight of our soldiers were killed and 30 were injured. We lost 60 horses and 65 were injured. This was also the first time that Indian officers led the Indian troops into a dangerous battle which they won. Whole of Israel knows about these heroes, while they are little known in their own motherland.”The famous Teen Murti Memorial in Delhi has been recently rechristened as Teen Murti Haifa Memorial by the Indian government, to pay obeisance to the brave Indian soldiers who fought in this historical battle a hundred years ago. “We are celebrating the bravery and determination of Indian soldiers and we’ll have the COAS present with us, to review the parade and inauguration of the Haifa Memorial in Jaipur,” added Mathson.Besides speaking about the Battle of Haifa, he also clarified certain issues being discussed about the Army, including restructuring. Giving examples of the news making rounds regarding the downsizing and the cadre review, he said that these issues were in a nascent discussion stage and no decisions have been taken so far.
