People were not even aware of the kind of methods and materials which can be used for ceramic sculpting. The exhibition is changing the perspective and it is visible from the response which it has received”, added Vineet Kacker, member core team of mid-career ceramic artists who conceived the idea of the exhibition. Ceramics are also a form of expression of an artist and my work has been based on nature like flow of water. This is actually a scientific art. More than 30 years ago when I started in this field no one would take it seriously and thought only village potters did this kind of work but gradually that is changing.

Jaipur: With the aim of taking ceramic art into the larger contemporary art world, Jawahar Kala Kendra (JKK) started the first Indian Ceramics Triennale, ‘Breaking Ground’ last month which will continue till November 18.The international ceramics exhibition has been organized in collaboration with the Contemporary Clay Foundation which includes 35 Indian and 12 international artist projects, 10 collaborations, 12 speakers, a symposium, film screenings along with workshops for adults and children. The ceramics artists featured here claim that they are optimistic that this exhibition will change the perception of the common people towards this form of art and are very happy with the response which they have received in the past fortnight.P R Daroz, an internationally renowned ceramic sculptor whose work is also displayed at the JKK told TOI, “An exhibition on this scale has never been done in the country and till a few years ago. People were not even aware of the kind of methods and materials which can be used for ceramic sculpting. This is actually a scientific art. More than 30 years ago when I started in this field no one would take it seriously and thought only village potters did this kind of work but gradually that is changing. Ceramics are also a form of expression of an artist and my work has been based on nature like flow of water. The exhibition has given a platform to many artists as well as aspirants to see many facets of the work together.”Daroz has been awarded the National Academy Award in ceramics by Lalit Kala Academy and is a former member of the International Academy of Ceramics.A collaboration with the British Ceramics Biennial has been set up to develop a continuing reciprocal arrangement between British and Indian ceramic artists. An exhibition of works by the late Kripal Singh Shekhawat, the artist behind the revival of Jaipur Blue pottery is also been showcased.“Not only an event like this especially for ceramics has been organised for the first time but also it is artist driven. The artists have formed a core committee to organise and more importantly everyone is learning so many different ways of ceramic sculpting some of which are quite unconventional like using clay which has not been fire-treated as well as different technologies. The exhibition is changing the perspective and it is visible from the response which it has received”, added Vineet Kacker, member core team of mid-career ceramic artists who conceived the idea of the exhibition.
