Political parties blame EC when going gets tough CEC

Jaipur: Setting aside all complaints against the EVMs by political parties, chief election commissioner O P Rawat said, “When competition is tough, fingers are raised on the election commission by political parties. Assembly elections in Rajasthan are due later this year.Replying to a question on black money menace in elections, Rawat said it has come to fore that there were several ‘expenditure-sensitive constituencies’ in Rajasthan and the commission has set up an air intelligence unit for the first time to tackle it.The commission has also directed Income Tax authorities to scrutinise the information provided by candidates in their affidavits.He said the Election Commission also launched an application called e-vigil, so that people can upload model code of conduct violations with secrecy of their identity. He said the commission has also contacted social media sites to ensure that no political party misuses the platform during the elections.Even after the final voters’ list for the state is published on September 27, if any eligible voters were found left out, they would be given a few more days’ time to enrol in the voters’ list, said chief election commissioner O P Rawat on Tuesday.The poll panel will ensure that the Election Commission of India’s (ECI) theme of ‘No-voter-to-be-left-behind’ was implemented, for the participation of every voter in building an empowered democracy, he said. But we have accepted all the challenges on complaints about EVMs and have come out clean.”Political parties raise suspicion on the role of Election Commission and make all kinds of allegations when the going gets tough, but the poll panel accepts all the challenges with an open mind and is constantly working to uphold its integrity, Rawat said at a media conference here.“The commission would be using the advanced M-3 tamper-proof EVMs and voter verifiable paper audit trail (VVPAT) for the first time for the upcoming assembly polls,” said Rawat.Rawat, who was on a two-day visit to the state for the review of the preparations for the upcoming assembly elections, said there were no ‘fake voters’ and the commission was continuously working to delete the duplicate voters and add legitimate ones to the electoral rolls.“The commission will ensure that no duplicate voter casts vote in the upcoming elections even if some duplicate names remained in the list,” he added.Rawat came to the city on Monday on a two-day visit to take up the issues of political parties, civil society groups and review poll preparations.
