Jaipur: With 290-year-old history, Pink City gears up to bag prestigious UNESCO heritage city title. It will be the second city in India to get the coveted tag.As inspection of the UNESCO team is scheduled between September 22 and 25, the state government departments are burning midnight oil for bagging the title.The walls of Jaipur heritage city are once again wearing the colour of hospitality ‘Terracotta Pink’ like it did in 1876 when it welcomed the prince of Wales and Queen Victoria. The civic bodies are also carrying out repair work of the heritage verandas.A senior official said, “To be included in the World Heritage List, sites must be of outstanding universal value and meet at least one out of 10 selection criteria. Moreover, it should have an outstanding example of a type of building, architectural or technological ensemble or landscape which illustrates significant stag in human history.“There are several reasons for the nomination, the Walled City, is an expression of the astronomical skills, historical values, unique urban form and exemplary foresighted city planning,” said an official.The grid iron planning of the city was very advanced for its times and certainly recognised as one of the best in the Indian subcontinent by many foreign travellers in the 18th and 19th centuries.While the grid iron pattern of planning has been used historically in city planning, its application at such a monumental scale for a planned trade city along with peculiar urban form makes it stand out as one of its kind in the history of urban planning of the Indian subcontinent.Official further said, there is one criteria that site should exhibit an important interchange of human values, over a span of time or within a cultural area, on developments in architecture or technology, monumental arts, town planning or landscape design.As Jaipur stands unique as a culmination of various architectural styles and an amalgamation of cultures in a unique 18th century town plan form, possibilities of selection are high.
