We have not received proper water supply for the past three days and are facing acute crisis.” “The situation is expected to get grimmer as water supply will soon be made twice a day. Residents from colonies across the city alleged that private tankers are taking advantage of the situation and are charging inflated rates. The Bisalpur dam, which is Jaipur’s lifeline, supplies 44 crore litres of drinking water daily. Recently, residents of Sanganer, Jalupura, Mori area, hit the roads after facing inconvenience due to water shortage.

Jaipur: Residents of many colonies in the city have started facing an acute water crisis , as regular supply has slowed down to a trickle and the gap is being filled by tankers. After the Public Health Engineering Department (PHED) reduced the supply of water from Bisalpur, due to less inflow in the dam this year, several complaints are being received every day. Residents from colonies across the city alleged that private tankers are taking advantage of the situation and are charging inflated rates. “The household need cannot be fulfilled with the water supplied by the PHED. We have to depend on tankers. Not only are the tankers coming late due to excess bookings, but they are also charging anything between Rs200 to Rs250,” said Gajendra Singh of Sanganer area.As the monsoon comes to an end, many protests can be seen against the government, demanding appropriate water supply. Recently, residents of Sanganer, Jalupura, Mori area, hit the roads after facing inconvenience due to water shortage. “The situation is expected to get grimmer as water supply will soon be made twice a day. Earlier, these protests could only be witnessed during the peak of summers. But it will be a challenge for the department to face protests throughout the year,” said a PHED official source.Officials informed that, the Bisalpur dam has limited water, as the water from the dam is supplied to not only Jaipur, but also to Ajmer and Tonk. To maintain the supply in Jaipur, the PHED will also dig 279 new tube wells and restore 273 old tube wells. The Bisalpur dam, which is Jaipur’s lifeline, supplies 44 crore litres of drinking water daily. As there was a negligible inflow, the supply has been reduced to 35 crore litres.Since last month, the PHED has also reduced the duration of water supply from the Bisalpur dam, as scanty rainfall this year has reduced the rain-water inflow into the dam. The department is now supplying water for 45 to 70 minutes daily, as against one to one-and-a-half hour.Residents further alleged, that in absence of monitoring by the PHED, many have also installed boosters at their houses. Shakti Singh, a resident of Siddharth Nagar said, “After the announcement of reduction in duration of supply, people have installed boosters illegally. We have not received proper water supply for the past three days and are facing acute crisis.”
