ICMS team gets info on cityrsquos historical value

If Jaipur gets the tag of ‘Heritage city’, this will put it on the world map and will attract more tourists. Along with the mayor, councillors from the Walled City, market associations and resident welfare associations also met team.City mayor Ashok Lahoti said, “I gave a powerpoint presentation to the team. The ICMS team, an associated body with UNESCO on Sunday visited heritage walkway at Chokri Modi Ka Khana, Rajasthan School of Art, Kishanpole and other areas in the Walled City. An official further said, “The team will prepare a report and will send it to UNESCO which will take the final call.” It has been said that Jaipur is the only city in the country, where heritage market and houses exist in an organised manner.

Jaipur: On the second day of his visit, the International Council on Monuments and Sites ( ICMS ) representative, Sharif Shams Imon, along with ASI director (technical) met city mayor Ashok Lahoti, where they were informed about historical values and unique city planning done nearly 290 years ago. Along with the mayor, councillors from the Walled City, market associations and resident welfare associations also met team.City mayor Ashok Lahoti said, “I gave a powerpoint presentation to the team. It has been said that Jaipur is the only city in the country, where heritage market and houses exist in an organised manner. If Jaipur gets the tag of ‘Heritage city’, this will put it on the world map and will attract more tourists. This will be monetarily beneficial for the city as well.”An official source present in the meeting said, the team was also informed about drainage system of heritage city was constructed in a way that a horse rider can pass through it. The ICMS team, an associated body with UNESCO on Sunday visited heritage walkway at Chokri Modi Ka Khana, Rajasthan School of Art, Kishanpole and other areas in the Walled City. During the three days’ visit between September 22 and 25, the team will visit a total of 41 monuments situated in the Walled City and scan its potential to become a heritage city.To be included in the World Heritage List, sites must be of outstanding universal value and the selection criteria set by UNESCO. The officials are hopeful of bagging the title as Jaipur fulfils majority of selection criteria. These include that site should represent a masterpiece of human creative genius. Moreover, it should have an outstanding example of a type of building, architectural or technological ensemble or landscape which illustrates significant tag in human history.There are several reasons for the nomination, the Walled City, is an expression of the astronomical skills, historical values, unique urban form and exemplary foresighted city planning. An official further said, “The team will prepare a report and will send it to UNESCO which will take the final call.”
