Jaipur: Strengthening facilities for testing food for adulteration, health department has launched four new food laboratories in four different districts of the state.Four laboratories have come up in Bikaner, Banswara, Bharatpur and Churu districts.In the state, there were seven food testing laboratories which were testing samples of food collected from across the state. The seventh laboratory was inaugurated recently in Jalore.Additional chief secretary (health) Veenu Gupta said that in all the existing laboratories, they have facilities for detecting chemicals and also they have equipment for microbiological testing of food products.

The new laboratories will help in sharing the burden of existing food laboratories.With four new laboratories become operational, now state has 11 such laboratories.Health minister Kalicharan Saraf said that they have spent Rs 55 crore on each of the four laboratories for construction and procurement of equipment.The existing laboratories are situated in Jaipur, Ajmer, Kota, Alwar, Jodhpur and Udaipur. The seventh laboratory was inaugurated recently in Jalore.Additional chief secretary (health) Veenu Gupta said that in all the existing laboratories, they have facilities for detecting chemicals and also they have equipment for microbiological testing of food products. However, at Jaipur’s food laboratory, there is additional facility for detecting heavy metals in food products.On the occasion, a mobile food testing laboratory has also been flagged off. It was developed with a cost of Rs 35 lakh. The mobile food testing laboratory has the facility of testing milk and other milk products along with the facilities for testing spices. The consumer will get on the spot result of the test. However, the health department has fixed Rs 50 per sample test of food products.The mobile food laboratory is equipped with high tech equipment and also it is fully air conditioned. The benefit of mobile testing facilities is that it will keep moving and help the consumers to find out the quality of spices, eatable oil and milk products they are consuming daily are safe or adulterated or substandard or unsafe, said a health department official.
