Woman set afire for refusing marriage, dies in hospital

The woman, in her last statement to the magistrate before her death, had stated that while she was coming from Indore to Bhopal around 10 days ago, she came across three women who offered her something to eat, the SHO said.The woman further stated that after consuming the eatables, she fell unconscious and when she gained consciousness, she found herself in a room at Bhilkhedi village where Purilal Tanwar raped her and started forcing her to marry him, the SHO added. Tanwar on Saturday morning, again forced her to marry him but she refused outrightly, following which Tanwar’s younger brother Kaniram poured kerosene over her and Purilal Tanwar set her on fire, the woman stated to the magistrate, the SHO said.The woman, with around 50 percent burn injuries, was rushed to Jhalawar medical college hospital where she succumbed to death during treatment on Saturday night, SHO Mahendra Kumar said.On the basis of the woman’s statement to the magistrate, police have booked Purilal Tanwar (35) and his brother, Kaniram Tanwar (30), both residents of Bhilkhedi village, under Sections 376, 342, 307 of IPC and sections of SC/ST Act, as the deceased woman belonged to the Schedule Caste community, the SHO said adding the two accused have not been arrested so far, as they have been absconding after the crime.
