Raj to get its 1st paediatric cath lab in Jodhpur

Jodhpur: State’s first and northern India’s third paediatric cath lab is coming up in Jodhpur. In Northern India, only AIIMS, Delhi and PGI, Chandigarh have the paediatric cath lab. “Now, open heart surgeries, valve-related surgeries and congenital heart ailments would be able to be carried out in Jodhpur itself,” Rathore said. Cardiac surgeon Subhash Balara said that with this lab, paediatric cardiology surgery will also develop in Jodhpur and that would be a big milestone for treatment of the heart problems of children below the age of 12 years. This cath lab, however, will be under control of paediatric department but the surgical procedures and post-operative care will be carried out by the cardiologists in coordination with the paediatrician.According to paediatrician J P Soni, this cath lab will be fully dedicated to children with all sorts of heart ailments and will soon be subjected to tender process with all the sanctions already obtained.

For this purpose Rs 5 crore have been sanctioned to S N Medical College for the purpose under National Child Health Program and additional Rs 10 lakh have been sanctioned by MP (Jodhpur) Gajendra Singh Shekhawat from MPLAD Fund. In Northern India, only AIIMS, Delhi and PGI, Chandigarh have the paediatric cath lab. Now, the laboratory that will be set up in Jodhpur will be more advanced than the former ones.Principal of S N Medical College, S S Rathore, said that with this lab in place, children with heart ailments will not have go out of the state for treatment. “Now, open heart surgeries, valve-related surgeries and congenital heart ailments would be able to be carried out in Jodhpur itself,” Rathore said. He said that currently, 2,000-2,500 children with heart-related ailments are treated at the Eco lab of the paediatric department of the MDM Hospital here every year.According to an estimate, about 1,80,000 children are born in India with congenital heart ailments and 60,000-80,000 of these have serious complications requiring immediate medical intervention. Cardiac surgeon Subhash Balara said that with this lab, paediatric cardiology surgery will also develop in Jodhpur and that would be a big milestone for treatment of the heart problems of children below the age of 12 years. “Though, we have been carrying out surgical interventions of the children up to the age of 4 years but there was no facility to handle the children below that age,” said Balara adding that such children had no option but to go out of state. This cath lab, however, will be under control of paediatric department but the surgical procedures and post-operative care will be carried out by the cardiologists in coordination with the paediatrician.According to paediatrician J P Soni, this cath lab will be fully dedicated to children with all sorts of heart ailments and will soon be subjected to tender process with all the sanctions already obtained.
