JAIPUR: A sensational broad-daylight bank heist is likely to remain a mystery after a year-long investigation fizzled out, owing to the local police’s laxity.With no arrests or identification of the accused or evidence at hand, the Adarsh Nagar police have closed the UCO Bank robbery case that took place in the heart of the city on July 20, 2017, when akin to a rehearsed drill, two armed men barged into the bank’s Raja Park branch at about 9.30am. They held the bank employees captive before fleeing with cash and jewellery worth nearly Rs 15 lakh on a bike. They fired three rounds of shots to subdue any chances of resistance.The duo, since then, has vanished into oblivion. No significant clue pointing to their identification could be recovered till date. Speaking to TOI, ACP (Adarsh Nagar) Pusphendra Singh said that an FIR was filed on December 31, 2018 after several months of investigation.The sources part of the probe rue the fact that local police units did not act on time. For instance, soon after the incident, cops had managed to zero down on the particular type of bike used by the accused but local units showed no alacrity in finding out its owners.“It was a 155 CC racing bike which is very expensive and also considerably rare. We had prepared a list of people who owned such bikes,” an official told TOI, adding that the investigators had also spoken to all mechanics of the city who dealt in repairing those bike to dig up details of the duo.“Based on the research and data, we gave responsibilities to local police units to go to their earmarked areas and carry out bikers’ verification. But it was never taken seriously by some units due to which the probe lost momentum,” the official said, adding that police stations got caught up in other duties.The next day on July 21, another major robbery at a bank in Mansarovar diverted police’s attention too.Another unit was sent to Haryana to track down the accused after CCTV footage indicated that the duo had passed through Tranport Nagar after the robbery.“The Transport Nagar road leads to Delhi and Haryana. We sent different teams in hope that they might track down the accused in those two places, but in vain,” the official added.
