Jaipur: Two Mewat-based persons managed to dupe over 18 banks across the state, using an ATM tampering trick they had learnt after visiting scores of ATMs and banks. The two accused identified as Haroon (18) and Zafaruddin (40), both natives of Nuh in Haryana, were arrested by the Vidhayakpuri police station on Sunday after investigation of many weeks. SHO Manish Charan informed TOI that the accused would tamper with ATM machines due to which it would show cash transaction reversal message, generating a request of not served slip. “The two accused would take these request slips to the banks to complain that though the cash credit message was sent, they did not get their money due to a glitch in the ATM,” he said.Charan said that the police have seized a total of 18 ATM cards from the accused. “The matter first came to us on February 15, when a complaint was registered by a bank that some people had duped the bank through fraudulent means,” he said. The city police said that the accused had opened their bank accounts in several small-time banks. “Many of these ATMs belonged to banks with small-time operations. The accused thought that their fraud would be hard to crack by the banks,” Charan said. The police have registered a case against the accused under Sections 420 (cheating), 120-B (Criminal conspiracy), and relevant sections of the IT act. This is one of the first cases of transaction reversal fraud in the state. The accused had been operating for past many years now. “Their modus operandi is different as they meticulously trained themselves to tamper with the ATMs so that their fraud is not detected,” the SHO told TOI.
