JAIPUR: After a year of twists and turns and high drama, the city police have closed the probe into the notorious Nahargarh Fort hanging case after it submitted a Final Report (FR) before the local court, treating Chetan Kumar Saini’s death as suicide. The FR was submitted on November 30, 2018, Saini’s family, however, claims they will move a protest petition to challenge the probe. “We are preparing to contest the FR through a protest petition as we think there are several angles needs to be explored including the contradictions in the hand writing samples,” said family lawyer Lalita Maharwal. On the morning of November 24, 2017, Saini’s body was found hanging from the ramparts of the iconic Nahargarh Fort at the peak of protests against the controversial film Padmaavat . The city had woken up to a shocking scene as scribblings on the Fort wall were linked to the ongoing protests.A CCTV footage retrieved from the stretch between Saini’s house in Nahari Ka Naka to the fort showed Saini walking up to the fort at about 4pm a day before his death. The police in its preliminary investigation claimed that Saini was in debt. The family, however, had refuted the police claims and asked the Brahmpuri police station to file an FIR under Section 302 (Murder) of the IPC.While an inquest report, which is usually filed by the police for unnatural deaths under Code Of Criminal Procedure (CrPC) was registered at Brahmpuri police station, the cops did not file an FIR.The FSL had claimed that scribblings on the wall and stones at the crime scene had matched with the samples of Saini’s writing samples. However, Maharwal told TOI that the family had conducted a separate handwriting test from different lab which contradicted FSL. “The report of the hand writing experts claimed that scribblings belonged to three different persons,” she said. Finally on June 5, 2018, an FIR was registered by the Brahmpuri police station under Sections 302 (Murder) and 201 (Causing disappearance of evidence of offence). The police told TOI that there were no clues to indicate that it was case of murder.
