Lady constable ends life over harassment by senior officers

JAIPUR: Alleging excessive mental harassment from senior officials, a 25-year-old woman constable in Jalore committed suicide by hanging herself from a rope inside her official quarter on Thursday.Geeta, was posted at Sanchore police station and had returned after completing her duty. She was found hanging while still in her police uniform. When asked about the suicide, SHO Pusphendra Verma alleged that the constable ended her life due to “personnel problems.”In the suicide letter, she apologized her bother and parents for taking the extreme step and said that she could no longer live her life as she was deeply exasperated due to Sanchore SHO, and head constable.

In a screenshot that she sent to her family members before ending her life, Geeta alleged that she was constantly pressurized by SHO, and a head-constable.Speaking to TOI, Jalore SP Keshar Singh said that an FIR under Section 306 (Abetment of suicide) has been registered against Circle Officer (CO), SHO and a woman constable. The family members however refused to hand over body for the post-mortem until officials were suspended. “We told family members that suspensions and transfers are not under our power due to model code of conduct,” Singh said.A native of Dhorimana in Barmer district, her relatives alleged that she was pushed to take the extreme step because of the senior staff.Keshar Singh said that an enquiry has be step up. When asked about the suicide, SHO Pusphendra Verma alleged that the constable ended her life due to “personnel problems.”In the suicide letter, she apologized her bother and parents for taking the extreme step and said that she could no longer live her life as she was deeply exasperated due to Sanchore SHO, and head constable. In the same letter she wrote she claimed that she wanted to live but these people would not let her.“The family members remain adamant that all officials be removed with immediate effect but it is not in power yet,” an official said, adding that efforts are made to pacify the family members. Singh said that he has received a memorandum of demands from the family members which will forwarded sent to the senior officials.
