JAIPUR: A Sanyaasi by choice, Sumedhanand Saraswati (67), BJP’s Lok Sabha MP from Sikar, is the poorest parliamentarian in the country having declared a total assets of just Rs 34,311, which is the lowest, according to the Association for Democratic Reforms ( ADR ) report released on Thursday.Born in Rohtak (Haryana), Saraswati, contested the Lok Sabha elections from Sikar in Rajasthan and defeated his nearest rival Pratap Singh Jat of the Congress party by a margin of around 2.39 lakh votes. His candidature was repeated from Sikar by the BJP in its first list of candidates for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.“Mai ek sanyaasi hoon. Mera koi property, jaaydaad, family kuch bhi nahi hai. (I am a sanyaasi. I don't have any property, family or anything else),” Saraswati told TOI."I am a social worker, I don't have any expectations, therefore, I don’t need money. I only need a pair of cloth to wear and a square meal a day,” added Saraswati, who leads a modest life at a vedic ashram in Piprali village of Sikar district. He has been living in Sikar for the past 23 years.A member of Arya Samaj, Saraswati, also said that party workers and his supporters contribute for the election-related and other expenses."When I am in need of a piece of cloth, people give me. The election was also fought by my supporters and party workers. They contributed, what they could, to fight the election," he said."This time I will win with a greater margin than last time," a confident but an equanimous Saraswati signed off.According to the ADR report, Telugu Desam Party (TDP) MP Jayadev Galla is the richest MP having declared assets worth Rs. 683 crore. Another MP from Jhargram, West Bengal, Uma Saren (Trinamool Congress), declared assets worth Rs. 4,99,646, which is the second lowest.As many as 430 (83%) of the total 521 members are crorepaties and the average assets per MP for 2014 Lok Sabha elections are Rs 14.72 crore, finds the report.It also says, party-wise, 227 (85%) of 267 BJP MPs, 37 (82%) of the 45 Congress MPs, 29 (78%) of the 37 AIADMK MPs and 22 (65%) of the 34 TMC MPs have declared assets worth more than Rs 1 crore.
