Cong to finalise names for 6 remaining seats

  • | Monday | 1st April, 2019

The Congress party is also mulling on the name of Shailendra Yadav (Kalu Bhaiya) to field him against former CM Vasundhara Raje’s son. Meanwhile, a source at Congress said, “The list of remaining six seats is likely to be announced after April 2. The names on the seats will be soon finalised.” Raje had won five consecutive elections before transferring the baton to her son Dushyant Singh in the 2004 assembly polls. Similarly, the BJP at Jaipur Rural, has pitched sitting MP and union minister Rajyavardhan Singh.

Jaipur: To put up a good fight in the upcoming polls, the Congress party will have to field its prominent leaders from six remaining seats including Jhalawar and Sriganganagar, where it has not tasted success in majority of general elections in the past. While a senior Congress leader has announced that the existing ministers will not contest the Lok Sabha elections, the party is searching for other six strong candidates on these seats. However, the Congress might give virtual walkover to opposition, if they field light-weight Congress candidates against the BJP stalwarts. The Congress is yet to declare nominees for Ajmer, Sriganganagar, Rajsamand , Jhalawar, Bhilwara and Jaipur Rural — which are among the 13 constituencies in the state that go to polls in the first phase on April 29.With three-time BJP MP Dushyant Singh in fray from his home turf Jhalawar, the Congress will have to field its strong leaders to win the electoral battle, which remains unconquered since 1989.Although there were talks of fielding Congress’ tallest leader, Pramod Jain Bhaya against Singh, but party might give ticket to his wife Urmila Jain, as he is a cabinet minister in Ashok Gehlot’s government. The Congress party is also mulling on the name of Shailendra Yadav (Kalu Bhaiya) to field him against former CM Vasundhara Raje’s son. However, he too fails to match their stature in this constituency.“The constituency has seen the dominance of former chief minister Vasundhara Raje and her family for the past 25 years. Raje had won five consecutive elections before transferring the baton to her son Dushyant Singh in the 2004 assembly polls. Only a strong leader can breach the BJP's Jhalawar citadel,” said a Congress leader. The Congress candidates will have to put in major efforts in consistencies including Bhilwara, Ajmer and Ganganagar, as these too have had a dominance of the BJP in last four Lok Sabha elections. On all these seats, BJP has won thrice in last four elections. After BJP fielded four-time MP Nihal Chand in Ganganagar, the Congress is facing a severe dearth of a senior face for the Lok Sabha polls. Similarly, the BJP at Jaipur Rural, has pitched sitting MP and union minister Rajyavardhan Singh. There are possibilities that senior Jat leader and former MP, Lal Chand Kataria could give a tough contest to Singh in this constituency that has dominance of Jat and Yadav community. But, Kataria too is an agriculture minister and if he does not contest election, a fresh face may give an edge to the BJP candidate.Jaipur Rural seat was constituted after 2008 and in the two Lok Sabha elections, it has been won by both Congress and BJP. Meanwhile, a source at Congress said, “The list of remaining six seats is likely to be announced after April 2. The names on the seats will be soon finalised.”
